Every now and again I am asked for my opinion on what camera to buy. My normal response is to ask what their budget is and what they intend to do with the camera.
The answers very if their budget is low and they just want to take general shots. However, the answer is different if their answer is that they want a “good” camera and they want to start taking “good” photographs.
I tell them that I shoot with a Canon because i have always shot with a Canon. My first SLR was a Canon because it was recommended to me and my parents by a professional who shot with a Canon. If they shot with a Nikon I probably would be using a Nikon today. The fact remans that its kind of like the Coke vs Pepsi debate; they both have their qualities depending on your individual tastes. You will not go wrong with either camera manufacturer, they both make excellent cameras and lenses.
I also tell them that whichever camera make they decide to go with it is the glass that really counts, that it is the lenses that makes the most difference. So, if you are going to spend money spend it on the glass!
If you are really undecided you can try to use one of each. Find a friend that will let you use theirs (don’t ask to borrow) and take some quality time with it. Let them show you how to use it. Then do the same with another friend that has the other camera.
If you don’t have any friends...I mean, can’t find ones that have cameras, then you can always rent them. I started hearing about this place out in Colorado. Pro Photo Rental.
