Spirit tasting with friends
The Journeyman Distillery is an Organic Spirits Distillery, located in the EK Warren historic Featherbone Factory, in Three Oaks, Michigan. Warren, a staunch prohibitionist, founded the historic building in 1883 as a buggy whip, and corsets factory. He revolutionized the manufacturing of corsets with the use of the softer featherbone, over the stiffer whalebone for corsets in the late 19th century. EK Warren’s success reached worldwide attention putting Three Oaks, Michigan on the map.
Everything about Journeyman Distillery is handcrafted. The offer artisan spirits with a focus on whiskey. While whiskey is what their owners originally fell in love with, they also offer a variety of quality organic spirits such as vodka, gin, and rum. They distill, bottle, label, and package each spirit right there at the distillery, the historic Featherbone Factory.
Michael had originally planned on taking his new Fujifilm X-T1 mirroless camera, but at the last minute we decided not to take any cameras, and if we needed to we would just use our cell phones. Since we were guests of our friends Nina & Dave we decided that we might be a little distracting if we took our camera. In hind site we should have taken the camera as Michael ended up taking pictures with his cell phone while I lighted the subject with mine. However, I don't think we were distracted (oh, I mean "distracting") one bit. The quality is quite good for a cell phone, but not as good as it would have been with the Fujifilm X-T1.
The event was a four course event where the Journeyman Distillery paired their spirits with a specially prepared food item.
The night started with something off the menu, a Gin based drink with dill seed.
First Course: Tartare of Salmon, jalapeno jam, tarragon-scented mango salsa
with a Dirty Vodka Martini (Journeyman Red Arrow Vodka, dry vermouth, liquid olive caviar)
Second Course: Backed Brie en Croute
with Rohr's Manhattan in Ice (Journeyman Silver Cross Whiskey, sweet vermouth, orange bitters)
This glass of Bourbon actually smoked!
Third Course: House-Cured Pastrami Steak, chive whipped potato, spring onion relish
with "Smoked" Journeyman Sour (Journeyman Featherbone Bourbon, Disaronno Amaretto, simple syrup, lemon)
Fourth Course: Chocolate Lava Cake, orange marmalade, salted caramel
with Maple Journey (Journeyman Ravenswood Rye, Chambord, maple sphere, bacon powder)
